A Video About The Method I Use When Teaching- Common Core and The Matrix
Unpacking Standards Template
The first step towards achieving proficiency in our standards is getting to know what we are about to learn! As a class, we will go through this template together to rewrite the standard in a kid friendly way.
Below is an example of how we unpack as a class- look at those brains at work!
Below is the student version. They fill this in as we go. When they get more comfortable with this process, they only complete this bottom part.
Matrix Template
Once our standard has been unpacked, we separate it into smaller pieces. I then take these pieces and put them into a capacity matrix and develop mini-lessons based on what the students need to learn. Here is an example using 6th Grade Standard W.6.3- Narrative Writing.Under the "What is my evidence?" column are the list of mini-lessons that the students will complete during this matrix. When this template is completely filled out, the students self-reflect on how they feel they are doing on the standard and then conference with me.
Summative Assessment
This new knowledge then gets put into practice through a summative assessment using subject matter from either Math, Science, or Social Studies. This particular writing piece revolves around Medieval Times which is being taught in Social Studies.
